WHAT IS REINING??....To rein a horse is not only to guide him but also to control his every movement.  The best reined horse should be 'willingly guided' or controlled with little or no apparent resistance.  We look for finesse, attitude, quickness and authority of performing various maneuvers with speed and excitement.   For those of you experienced in the English world, think of it as Dressage's western cousin; an event that requires extreme discipline, finesse and control.

Reining and Reined Cow Horse are events that have evolved from the work of ranch horses.  Each maneuver used in patterns today served a purpose when working cattle or tending to other chores around the ranch.  Early competitions were designed to showcase who had the handiest, hence best horse!
